It was a Saturday evening as we headed to Subway to pick up a couple sandwiches to take to the park for a little picnic. We got to the park and were just sitting in the car talking about something for a minute before getting out. It was then that we witnessed some drama across the street. I don't remember the exact situation now, but there was a big ol' fight of some sort going on. I think it was between a man and a woman. Quite a romantic start to our evening. ;-)
We got out of the car to find a good spot to spread out our picnic blanket. It was such a nice October evening (the 6th, to be exact). We relaxed and chit-chatted about any and everything. After we finished eating, Chad had a little CD player and played a mix CD that he had made especially for that evening. Little did I know, he had a certain song picked out to propose during.
When 'She Said Yes', by Dusty Drake, came on, Chad nervously fumbled in his pocket for something. I was busy rambling and didn't even notice. He was probably thinking, "OK, shut up already!" I looked at him and he blurted out "Will you marry me?!" I was so shocked and caught off guard, all I could do was say "Are you serious" over and over again and I laughed and cried. Poor guy.
After this went on for a few minutes, I somewhat regained my composure and asked him to do it again. Just meaning for him to ask the question again. But he restarted the song and started all over. When he asked the question, I started laughing and crying again---I couldn't help it! I was so nervous and excited. But, this time, I managed to get out a "Yes!"
We sat on the blanket together for awhile longer, just soaking in the moment. And then we couldn't wait any longer. We had to head back to campus and tell all our friends the exciting news!
After lots of hugs and teary-eyed congratulations and phone calls to friends and family back home, we went back to the park to hang out together.
Then we went back to campus again to hang out with our good friend, Larisa, and celebrate with some sparkling grape juice! :-)
Chad's proposal was so simple and sweet. I loved that he took us back to the place where we first hung out together, just the two of us. He didn't need to give me some big sh-peal and say all these lovey dove-y things to me. His actions in the months leading up to his proposal told me everything I needed to know about how he felt toward me. It was so us. And it was perfect.
To this day, the park is still one of our favorite hang out places.
